Mauricio Pochettino responds to Thiago Silva's 'career's almost over' comments

Thiago Silva, who turns 40 in September, has defied expectations by maintaining his high level of performance.

The seasoned centre-back has featured in almost every minute of Chelsea's Premier League matches this season, offering invaluable leadership and experience to the team's young players. However, speculation has arisen regarding his future at Stamford Bridge, as his contract is set to expire in the summer.

According to Sky Sports, Pochettino has previously stated that the club has not engaged in discussions about a new deal. Following Chelsea's recent victory over Middlesbrough, which secured their place in the Carabao Cup final, Silva acknowledged that his playing career is nearing its end. Nevertheless, he remains calm and open to whatever the future holds.

During his pre-match conference ahead of Chelsea's FA Cup fourth-round clash against Aston Villa, Pochettino was asked about the comments made by Silva. Pochettino admitted that he didn't hear what Silva said after the game and therefore couldn't comment on it. He emphasized that they didn't discuss the next season and that only Silva and the club know if it will be his last season or not. Pochettino focused on the present, highlighting the importance of Silva staying fit and praising his performance at his age.

He expressed the team's happiness with Silva and stated that what will happen in the future is up to him. Silva joined Chelsea in 2020, winning the Champions League in his first season and achieving further success in subsequent campaigns. He has made 142 appearances for the club so far and was named the Player of the Year and Player's Player of the Year for 2022/23.
