Kyle Walker-Peters is not exactly the sort of name that is going to get Chelsea supporters off their feet.

Yet signing Kyle Walker-Peters this month could prove to be very smart business by Chelsea.

According to talkSPORT, the Blues are interested in the Southampton defender, whose contract is running down.

Last summer, The Sun reported that the Saints valued the right-back at around £20m.

Kyle Walker-Peters could help solve Chelsea’s full-back issue

Right now, Mauricio Pochettino has a problem in both full-back positions. Reece James and Ben Chilwell keep getting injured, with the former currently sidelined after undergoing hamstring surgery.

The Argentine is also without Marc Cucurella, while Levi Colwill, a central defender, is currently playing at left-back.

Walker-Peters is obviously familiar with the Premier League and is capable of starting at either right-back or left-back, positions he has played in at Southampton. He could be a very useful squad player for the Blues.

Kyle Walker-Peters is the smartest piece of business Chelsea can do this month

When you look at Chelsea’s squad, the area that needs strengthening the most is probably up front.

The club are asking a lot of Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja, two 22-year-olds, if they are expecting them to fire the team into the top four.

However, who is really out there at the moment? It does not look like they can get Victor Osimhen yet after he signed a new contract at Napoli.

With that in mind, if Chelsea do go on to sign a new centre-forward this month, it is likely to be a panic buy like Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, who is still quite inexperienced at 20, and that would not be smart business.

Signing a cheap, versatile and experienced player such as Walker-Peters who can fix a big problem in Chelsea’s squad, then, is arguably the smartest thing the club can do during this transfer window.
